The SHARE project wants to gather all the Community and to develop the concept of grid in biomedical research. The name of the project has got a double meaning as it is a verb as well as an acronym designing "Supporting and structuring Healthgrid Activities and Research in Europe. Both senses are thought in the same way because sharing information at an international level makes the research go forward and secondly the full designation of the project's name demonstrates well that Europe is very keen of being involved into the project.
The HealthGrid initiative published in 2004 its White Paper. The conclusion of this document developed the aspects of HealthGrid technologies and user status and this finally initiated the SHARE project proposal. Its main goal is intended to ensure the successful take-up of HealthGrid within the next 10 years by creating a roadmap for essential technology development in the coming years.
SHARE is a European initiative defending the Grid concepts and the introduction of new technologies in the medical sector, involving e-health or e-infrastructures into medical research. These new tool concepts in medical research open a very new perspective and their integration in future years appears like a great challenge for the evolvement of new technologies in research area. Now, it is also important to act at the EU-level for promoting Grids for health and for disseminating information to scientists as well as at the citizen level. In this way, dissemination is doing a very good optimal exploitation of resources.
Data are needed for research, medicine evolution, science and technology, analysis, and overall for the massive share of quantities of diverse geographically distributed information or computationally intensive analysis techniques. That is why getting the access to different sources of medical data is a key requirement for providing equitable and efficient healthcare of the highest quality. This service is usually geographically distributed, and the knowledge from these data is extracted from the availability of computer-based tools. Nevertheless, it is important to notice that legal and ethical aspects have been strongly studied by the project Consortium regarding individual property and integrity rights.
As said before, the global objective of the project is to define a comprehensive and detailed European Research and Development roadmap, covering both technology and policy aspects as well as guiding and promoting beneficial EU-wide uptake of HealthGrid technologies and applications into health research, and into healthcare service provision.
